A new era: while adhering to the fundamentals that made the Anno franchise a success, the near-future setting will bring numerous new gameplay mechanics, architectural breakthroughs, and all new challenges. Additionally, players will be able to build massive cities, the scope of which has never been seen in prior Anno games.
A dynamic world: the world of Anno 2070 will evolve differently depending on each player’s playing style and choices. Players’ decisions will have an impact on the environment, the architectural look of their world, and the needs of their populations, leading them to refine and better understand the impact of their personal approaches to managing the world’s resources.
Factions: players will be able to select between two factions when building their empires. Players can choose between an industrial and efficient course by joining the Tycoons or a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly direction by siding with the Ecos.
Multiplayer and Online features: Anno 2070 will include innovative online modes offering players brand new possibilities to get in touch with gamers all around the world.
Single player campaign: a story-driven single player mode with a deep variety of challenges.
Single player "continuous mode": the renowned endless game mode where the objective is to build the biggest civilization possible without time constraints.
Previous games in the Anno franchise have always been rooted in the past. But the popular strategy/simulation series if time travelling with Anno 2070, challenging players to take on new challenges in a world ravaged by the consequences of global warming. The question you have to ask as you set out is which side will you choose?
In Anno 2070 two factions are vying for control: the Ecos and the Tycoons. The Ecos have responded to the rising sea levels and other environmental issues by expanding carefully and in tune with nature, relying on natural sources of power. The Tycoons don't worry about such things, choosing tactics that allow for aggressive expansion and harm the area around them. Ecos will expand slower, but won't have the same troubles as Tycoons in the long run, since their aggressive expansion eventually requires massive amounts of energy to fuel it.
Either faction you choose has a number of needs to fulfill in order to expand. You have to worry about the fertility of the land, the amount of energy your city needs, and whether or not you're providing enough housing and facilities for your people. You get to be a master city planner a la Sim City, laying out infrastructure as well as setting aside resources for future expansions and military units.
Since this is a world where rising sea levels have covered even more of the world with water, humans have also been forced to expand into underwater colonies. Anno 2070 will have several stages that require you to manage units and buildings in the land, sea and at the bottom of the ocean. And whether on land or sea floor, all of your societies will require you to carefully balance their energy, infrastructure and food needs.
With the world in such a tumultuous state, conflict and disaster are easy to stir up. If you expand aggressively it can lead to war with other nations, forcing you to build up an army and wage a real-time strategy battle against opposing nations. Additionally, if you expand without regard for the world around you, the environment might lash out, with tornadoes or other natural disasters befalling your struggling people. Everything you do has consequences in Anno 2070, making for a world that is supposed to adapt to your play style.
Anno 2070 is complex, so much so that one demo simply isn't enough to really grasp everything. But what I did see looked great, both from a visual and gameplay standpoint. Strategy and simulation fans have a lot to look forward to later this year in what might be Ubisoft's biggest PC release.
